Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that cover a tooth. They’re typically made of metal, porcelain, or a combination of both materials. The combination of porcelain on metal is most common because it combines durability with a natural appearance. Porcelain is tinted to match your natural teeth and is stain resistant.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a popular prosthetic device used to replace a lost tooth with a natural looking prosthetic tooth, which is anchored with dental crowns. In addition to filling in any gaps left by lost teeth, a dental bridge also prevents your remaining teeth from moving into the space created when your tooth was lost.

Why do I need a dental crown or bridge?

Crowns are used to cover and protect damaged or weakened teeth. They are also used to cover teeth that are cracked, chipped, stained, or that don’t match their neighboring teeth.

Crowns are a popular cosmetic treatment to create an attractive and natural looking smile and also act as anchors for dental bridges, which fill in gaps left by missing teeth.

How are crowns and bridges installed?

You can have dental crowns without a bridge, but in most cases, dental bridges require crowns to hold them in place. Crowns and bridges typically require two visits for complete installation.

During the first visit, Dr. Heggade examines your teeth to ensure that a crown or bridge is the best treatment to resolve your issue and that your teeth are healthy enough to support a crown or bridge.

Dr. Heggade prepares your teeth for crowns by carefully removing a thin layer of tooth enamel — this creates space around your teeth so your crowns fit flush against their neighbors.

Then, Dr. Heggade takes a mold of your teeth, which is used to custom-make the crown or bridge to fit your mouth correctly. She fits you with temporary crowns to protect your teeth while your permanent crowns and bridge are made.

At the next appointment, Dr. Heggade removes your temporary crowns and fits your permanent crowns or bridges onto your teeth. She checks your bite before permanently bonding the crowns to your teeth. Finally, she buffs and polishes the crowns and bridge until they shine like natural teeth.
